Doors to the community health centre are finally open

I was in Ruhanga at the back end of Feb 2013 and caught up with the team working on the community health centre and they sent me updates on progress during the summer

Denis and his team continued to work towards the finishing line and just as they thought the end was in sight an inspector from the District Council visited and demanded a whole lot of changes, changes that required large sums of money.

Our friends at Hastoe were instrumental in helping the team to final mile.

The dispensary will be a crucial part of this initiative, medicines are very expensive in Uganda even when folk have money.

One of the changes the District Inspector wanted to see was a tiled floor. At the time I thought he was being nitpicking but looking at the results, I can see his point.

Back in February I was in Ruhanga and this what the community medical centre looked like. A few months on and I am amazed by the amount of work that has gone in

And here is a video clip from my visit

As you can there was an awful lot of work to do

This outside verandah will also form part of the waiting room – it is a great facility to have as folk can take shelter from the both and the sun and the rain

Work on the Community Health Centre gets underway

Head Master Office and Staff room

Phew! It is August already, the Olympics have come and gone. Really proud that one of the Gold medals went to Stephen Kiprotich a Ugandan long Distance runner. Did you know it is 40 years since Uganda won a gold medal at the Olympics! This is a cue to get our school children interested in sports, you just never know the next Gold medal winner may come from Ruhanga.

So what have we been up to in the village

A fair amount but  suffice to say, We have got off to a good start this year and have already completed a girls only toilet at the school to ensure that the older girls can remain at school, we completed a school kitchen so we can feed the children whilst they are in school, and work is under way on the Community Health Centre which we hope to complete by the end of the year.

Pit Latrine construction

These are the beginnings of a pit latrine that will be made available for the use of of callers to the health centre
